Description
South Africa's Most Scenic Trail Race
The Whale of Trail is widely regarded as one of the most scenic trail running events in South Africa, set within the spectacular De Hoop Nature Reserve on the southern Cape coast. This 53-kilometre ultra follows the well-established CapeNature 5-day hiking trail, compressed into a single day of coastal trail running through one of the Western Cape's most pristine and biodiverse nature reserves.
De Hoop Nature Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone, renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, dramatic limestone cliffs, white sand dunes and crystal-clear ocean. Between June and December, southern right whales calve in the protected waters just offshore — giving the race its name and adding a truly magical dimension to the running experience.
Course and Format
53 km — Ultra Trail (1,900m D+)
The 53-kilometre course follows the De Hoop Whale Trail, a coastal hiking route that traverses some of the most dramatic scenery in the Western Cape. The route takes runners along limestone cliffs, across white sand beaches, through coastal fynbos vegetation and over rolling dune systems. With approximately 1,900 metres of cumulative ascent, the elevation profile is characterised by constant undulation rather than major climbs — the relentless ups and downs over sandy terrain make this deceptively tough.
Starting at 07:00 from Potberg Enviro Centre, runners follow the coastline westward through terrain that alternates between rocky cliff-top paths, deep sand sections, river mouth crossings and firm beach running. The route offers constant ocean views and the possibility of whale sightings from the trail.
Terrain and Conditions
The De Hoop terrain combines rocky limestone cliff paths, deep soft sand, firm beach sections, fynbos trails and river crossings. The sand sections are particularly energy-sapping and can slow even experienced ultra runners significantly. The limestone rock provides good grip but is uneven and can be sharp.
August conditions are typically mild and pleasant — temperatures of 15-22°C with the possibility of rain and wind. The coastal location means weather can change quickly, and strong onshore winds are possible. The exposed nature of the route means there is little shelter from wind or rain.
Practical Information
- Getting there: De Hoop Nature Reserve is approximately 3 hours east of Cape Town, near Bredasdorp
- Whale season: the race takes place during whale season (June-December) — southern right whales are regularly visible from the trail
- Conservation fee: CapeNature reserve entry fee included in race entry
Will I see whales during the Whale of Trail?
Very likely. The race takes place in August, which is peak whale season at De Hoop. Southern right whales calve in the sheltered waters just offshore and are regularly visible from the cliff-top sections of the trail. Whale sightings are common and add a truly unique dimension to this coastal ultra.
How much sand running is there?
A significant proportion of the 53 km course is on sand — from soft beach sand to harder dune trails. The sand sections are the most physically demanding part of the race and can significantly slow pace. Trail shoes with good sand drainage and a willingness to embrace slow sand running are essential.
Is the Whale of Trail suitable for a first ultra?
While the terrain is not technically extreme, the 53 km distance combined with the energy-sapping sand, constant undulation, and 1,900 metres of elevation gain make this a substantial challenge. It is suitable for well-prepared runners with solid trail experience, but first-time ultra runners should be aware of the sand factor, which makes pace prediction difficult.
