Description

South Africa's Premier 3-Day Stage Trail Run

The AfricanX Trailrun is South Africa's premier three-day stage trail run, nestled in the heart of the beautiful Houw Hoek valley in the Overberg region of the Western Cape. This unique event pairs teams of two runners who tackle approximately 74 kilometres of spectacular mountain trails over three days, creating a shared adventure that has become a highlight of the South African trail running calendar.

The race takes place in the picturesque mountains surrounding the Houw Hoek Hotel, offering runners three distinct days of trail running through the diverse fynbos-covered landscapes of the Overberg. The team format — mandatory pairs of two — sets the AfricanX apart from most trail races, creating a social and supportive atmosphere that has earned it a devoted following among South African trail runners.

Course and Format

3-Day Stage Race — ~74 km total

The race covers approximately 74 kilometres over three days with varying daily distances:

  • Day 1: approximately 24 km — a solid introduction to the Houw Hoek terrain
  • Day 2: approximately 32 km — the longest and most challenging stage
  • Day 3: approximately 18 km — a shorter final stage to the finish

Teams of two (male, female, or mixed) must stay together throughout each stage, with both runners crossing the finish line together. This creates a unique dynamic of teamwork, pacing and mutual support that defines the AfricanX experience.

Terrain and Conditions

The Houw Hoek mountains offer classic Western Cape fynbos trail running: rocky mountain paths, exposed ridgelines, stream crossings and fire-break climbs through indigenous vegetation. The terrain is hilly with significant climbing across all three days, but without extreme technical difficulty. The fynbos vegetation provides a fragrant and colourful backdrop, particularly in late summer and autumn.

Practical Information

  • Team format: mandatory teams of 2 — male/male, female/female, or mixed pairs
  • Festival village: based at the Houw Hoek Hotel with camping, food stalls and evening entertainment
  • Getting there: Houw Hoek is approximately 1 hour east of Cape Town on the N2 highway

Do I need a running partner for the AfricanX?

Yes. The AfricanX is a mandatory pairs event — you must enter and run as a team of two. If you don't have a partner, the organisers sometimes facilitate partner matching. The team format is a core part of the AfricanX experience, encouraging mutual support and shared achievement across the three days.

What level of trail runner is the AfricanX suitable for?

The AfricanX is accessible to fit trail runners with some experience. The daily distances (18-32 km) are manageable for well-prepared runners, and the team format allows partners to support each other through difficult sections. However, the terrain is hilly and the cumulative 74 km over three days should not be underestimated.

What is included in the entry?

Entry includes three days of racing, route marking, aid stations, medical support, race village facilities and entertainment. Accommodation is not typically included but options range from camping at the venue to staying at the Houw Hoek Hotel or nearby B&Bs. The race village creates a festive atmosphere over the three days.
