Description
One of South Africa's Oldest and Toughest Trail Runs
The Hout Bay Trail Challenge (HBTC) is one of the most storied trail running events in South Africa, known for its uncompromising mountain terrain and stunning coastal views. The race circumnavigates the mountains surrounding the picturesque village of Hout Bay on the Cape Peninsula, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, Chapman's Peak and the surrounding peaks.
The HBTC is renowned among South African trail runners as a genuine test of mountain running ability. The 40-kilometre course with over 2,500 metres of climbing across three distinct legs makes it one of the most vertically challenging trail marathons in the Western Cape. The event can be run as an individual challenge or as a team of three, with each runner completing one leg.
Course and Format
40 km — 3 Legs (2,500m D+)
The course is divided into three legs that circumnavigate the mountains encircling Hout Bay. Each leg offers different terrain and challenges — from the steep, rocky ascents of the opening leg to the technical ridgeline running and dramatic descents of the later stages. The total elevation gain of over 2,500 metres across 40 kilometres means this is one of the steepest trail marathons in South Africa.
The team option allows groups of three runners to share the challenge, with each runner completing one leg. This makes the event accessible to a wider range of runners while maintaining the demanding nature of the full course.
Terrain and Difficulty
The terrain is classic Cape Peninsula mountain running: rocky sandstone paths, steep scrambling sections, narrow cliff-edge trails and indigenous fynbos vegetation. The mountains around Hout Bay are steep and exposed, with significant technical difficulty throughout. Weather on the ridgelines can be challenging, with wind and cloud common even on fine days in the valley below.
Practical Information
- Team option: run individually or as a team of 3 (one leg each)
- Getting there: Hout Bay is a 20-minute drive from central Cape Town
- Weather: September conditions vary — mild temperatures but potentially windy and wet on the ridgelines
Can I run the Hout Bay Trail Challenge as a team?
Yes. The 40 km course is divided into 3 legs, and you can enter as a team of 3 with each runner completing one leg. This makes the event accessible to runners who may not be ready for the full 40 km with 2,500m+ of climbing, while still experiencing the challenge and beauty of the route.
How does the HBTC compare to other Cape Town trail races?
The HBTC is considered one of the toughest trail marathons in the Western Cape due to its extreme climbing ratio — over 2,500m of elevation gain in just 40km. While shorter than UTCT, the sustained technical terrain and relentless vertical make it a formidable challenge that is highly respected among South African trail runners.
What views can I expect?
Spectacular views of Hout Bay harbour, Chapman's Peak, the Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula. The route runs across the ridgelines surrounding Hout Bay, providing almost continuous panoramic views in all directions on clear days.
