Description
Trail Running in the Land of the Pharaohs
The Sinai Mountain Challenge is an extraordinary trail running event set in the dramatic desert mountains of the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. Organised by Ultra Ibex, this event takes runners through the ancient landscapes of St. Catherine, home to Egypt's highest mountains and some of the most historically significant terrain on Earth. The Sinai's rugged granite peaks, deep wadis and biblical landscapes create a trail running experience that is utterly unique.
The race takes place in the mountainous heart of the Sinai Peninsula, near Mount Sinai (Jebel Musa, 2,285m) and Egypt's highest peak, Mount Catherine (Jebel Katarina, 2,629m). This is a landscape of bare granite mountains, narrow canyons, scattered Bedouin settlements and the famous St. Catherine's Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 6th century.
Courses and Formats
30 km — Mountain Challenge
The 30-kilometre Mountain Challenge takes runners through the most dramatic sections of the St. Catherine mountain terrain, including exposed ridgelines, deep wadis and rocky mountain passes. The course showcases the extraordinary geological beauty of the Sinai's granite peaks.
24 km and 27 km Distances
Additional distances provide options for runners of varying abilities, all traversing the same spectacular Sinai mountain landscapes with varied terrain from sandy wadi floors to rocky mountain ascents.
Terrain and Conditions
The Sinai mountain terrain is characterised by bare granite peaks, loose scree slopes, narrow canyon sections and sandy wadi floors. The landscape is starkly beautiful — vast expanses of bare rock in shades of red, orange and grey, punctuated by occasional oasis gardens and ancient stone structures. The running surface varies from rocky single-track to soft sand, demanding versatile footwear and adaptable running technique.
The high-altitude Sinai desert climate brings clear skies and excellent visibility, but also significant temperature variation. Daytime temperatures in the mountains are moderate (15-25°C depending on season), but nights can be surprisingly cold at altitude.
History and Significance
Ultra Ibex has been pioneering trail running events across Egypt, bringing runners to extraordinary locations from the Wadi Degla canyon near Cairo to the remote deserts of Fayoum and the mountains of Sinai. The Sinai Mountain Challenge puts runners in the footsteps of millennia of history, through landscapes mentioned in ancient texts and surrounded by some of Egypt's most sacred sites.
