Description

Trail Running Between Lagoon and Nature Reserve

Ultras et Raids au Sénégal is a multi-distance trail running event set in the Thiès region of Senegal, between the Lagune de la Somone and the Popenguine Nature Reserve. This event invites runners to discover the diverse landscapes of coastal Senegal through four carefully designed trail courses, from the baobab-dotted savannah to mangrove-lined lagoons and the dramatic cliffs of the nature reserve.

The event showcases a side of Senegal rarely seen by visitors — the wild, undeveloped coastline and interior of the Petite Côte, where traditional fishing villages, sacred forests and wildlife reserves create a running environment rich in natural beauty and cultural encounters.

Courses and Formats

75 km — Grand Trail

The flagship 75-kilometre Grand Trail is designed for experienced runners, presenting a full-day challenge through the most diverse terrain of the Thiès region. The course traverses savannah, lagoon edges, nature reserve trails and coastal sections, testing endurance, navigation and adaptability to varied terrain and conditions.

Shorter Distances

Additional distances provide options for all levels, allowing runners to experience the beauty of Senegalese trail running in formats suited to their experience and ambition.

Terrain and Conditions

The terrain combines sandy coastal paths, laterite tracks through baobab woodland, mangrove boardwalks near the lagoon, and rocky trails through the Popenguine Nature Reserve. April in Senegal is at the end of the dry season — hot (30-35°C) with low humidity. The heat is the primary challenge, along with sandy sections that sap energy. Sun protection and hydration strategy are essential.

Practical Information

  • Getting there: Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), approximately 1 hour south to the race area
  • Climate: April is hot and dry — 30-35°C, intense sun
  • Visa: many nationalities do not need a visa for Senegal

Where does the trail take place in Senegal?

The event takes place in the Thiès region on Senegal's Petite Côte, between the Lagune de la Somone (a mangrove-fringed lagoon popular with birdwatchers) and the Réserve Naturelle de Popenguine (a protected coastal nature reserve). This area is approximately 70 km south of Dakar.

How hot is it in April?

April is at the end of Senegal's dry season, with temperatures typically reaching 30-35°C. Humidity is relatively low compared to the rainy season (July-October), but the direct sun and heat are significant factors. Early morning starts and thorough hydration planning are essential for the longer distances.

What wildlife might I see?

The Popenguine Nature Reserve and Somone Lagoon are home to diverse wildlife including warthogs, monkeys, jackals and over 200 bird species. The lagoon is particularly rich in birdlife, with pelicans, flamingos, herons and kingfishers commonly seen. The baobab woodland also hosts a variety of raptors and savannah species.
