Description
Rwanda's First Multi-Stage Ultra Marathon
Ultra X Rwanda is a groundbreaking multi-stage ultra marathon and the first event of its kind in Rwanda, the "Land of a Thousand Hills". Organised by Ultra X, a global leader in multi-stage ultra-distance events, this race takes runners through Rwanda's spectacular volcanic highlands, lush forests and rolling hills in a two-day format that combines competitive racing with extraordinary African landscape immersion.
The event is a UTMB indexed race, offering runners valuable points towards UTMB World Series qualification. Set in the volcanic highlands near Lake Ruhondo and Kinigi, at the foot of the Virunga Mountains — home to the world's last mountain gorillas — Ultra X Rwanda delivers one of the most unique and beautiful ultra running experiences on the planet.
Courses and Formats
110 km — The 100K
The flagship 110-kilometre race is a two-day multi-stage ultra that takes runners from Lake Ruhondo through the volcanic highlands to Kinigi and back. Runners camp overnight at designated campsites, with the race covering the most dramatic and diverse terrain of the Rwandan highlands. The course traverses terraced hillsides, eucalyptus forests, crater lakes and volcanic terrain with views of the Virunga volcanoes.
50 km — The 50K
The 50-kilometre distance offers a concentrated but still formidable Rwandan highland experience. This single-stage option covers the most scenic sections of the 100K route, making it accessible for runners who want the Ultra X Rwanda experience in a shorter format.
Terrain and Conditions
Rwanda's terrain lives up to its "Land of a Thousand Hills" nickname. The course is relentlessly hilly, with constant climbing and descending through the volcanic highlands. The altitude — consistently between 1,800 and 2,500 metres — adds physiological challenge to the steep terrain. Trails range from well-maintained paths to narrow tracks through banana plantations, tea estates and eucalyptus forests.
January in Rwanda is warm with occasional afternoon showers. Temperatures at altitude range from 15-25°C, with higher humidity than East African highland norms. The volcanic soil can become slippery when wet.
Conservation and Community
Rwanda is renowned for its conservation success story, particularly the recovery of mountain gorilla populations in the Virunga Mountains. Ultra X Rwanda contributes to local community development and conservation efforts, and runners may have the opportunity to combine their race experience with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park — one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife experiences.

Is Ultra X Rwanda a UTMB qualifier?
Yes. Ultra X Rwanda is a UTMB indexed race in both the 100K (110km) and 50K categories. Finishers earn UTMB Index points and Running Stones that count towards qualification for UTMB World Series finals including UTMB Mont-Blanc.
Can I combine Ultra X Rwanda with gorilla trekking?
Yes. The race takes place near Kinigi, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, home to the world's last mountain gorillas. Many runners extend their trip to include gorilla trekking permits (from $1,500 per person). This makes Ultra X Rwanda one of the few trail races in the world where you can combine competitive running with a world-class wildlife experience.
What is the altitude at Ultra X Rwanda?
The course runs primarily between 1,800 and 2,500 metres above sea level. While not extreme altitude, the constant hills combined with the elevation can affect runners arriving from sea level. Arriving a day or two early in Kigali (1,567m) can help with acclimatisation.
